Fitness App Users Form Six Self-Management Types

In 2026, researchers published in JMIR Medical Informatics analyzed 1,025 fitness and weight management app users drawn from 2,518 survey responses to identify user heterogeneity in self-management. Cluster analysis of eight characteristics yielded six user types and measured satisfaction across five functional design categories, finding highest median satisfaction for health guidance and monitoring (4.00) and lowest for gamification (3.00).
Scoring Rationale
Solid peer-reviewed study providing actionable user segmentation for app design, but with limited novelty and focus on fitness/weight management.
