Von der Leyen Criticizes Trump's Surtaxes Proposal

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Jan. 20, 2026 at the World Economic Forum in Davos that US President Trump's proposed additional tariffs are "a mistake" and criticized his threats regarding Greenland. She warned tariffs could create a dangerous downward spiral, called for a "firm, united and proportionate" EU response, and said Germany will bolster Arctic security with Greenland, Denmark and the United States.
