Researchers Use 3D Shape Analysis To Reconnect Artifacts

Researchers published a study in the journal Heritage Science demonstrating that high-resolution 3D scanning and computational deviation mapping can test whether excavated fragments match museum funerary masks. In tests on Graeco-Roman Egyptian cartonnage fragments, the method found sub-millimeter surface agreement consistent with shared molds. The approach enables noninvasive, shareable digital comparisons that can reconnect displaced artifacts across institutions.
