Google Replaces Publisher Headlines With AI

In early December and continuing into January, The Verge reports that Google has begun replacing publishers' headlines in Google Discover with AI-generated "trending topic" headlines that it says "perform well for user satisfaction." The AI versions sometimes misrepresent or conflate linked stories and truncate original headlines, prompting publisher complaints and concerns about traffic attribution and misinformation. Google provided a spokesperson statement describing the feature.
