Canada Proposes New Online Harms Legislation

On Jan. 23, 2026, Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon said the federal government is working on online harms legislation, and that Culture Minister Marc Miller will bring the bill forward. Solomon said the measure would be separate from his planned privacy legislation and from a justice bill tabled last year that includes provisions criminalizing some deepfakes; the earlier Online Harms Act of 2024 never became law.
